My child has food allergies/special dietary needs, will he/she still be able to attend?
Ryerson's kitchen staff prepares three meals per day and an evening snack in accordance with the Canada Food Guide. A vegetarian option is offered with every meal. However, other dietary needs are accommodated on an individual basis.
It is advisable that any severe allergies be indicated on the registration and health form. If we are aware of your child's allergies in advance, our health care coordinator and head cook will be able to contact you and make any special arrangements. If you would like to contact them directly to discuss your child's needs, please call the camp at 519-426-1237 after June 15th.
Ryerson camp is NOT a nut free environment; however, if we are aware that a camper is registered with a nut allergy (or any other anaphylactic food allergy), all containing products are held under strict lockdown for the duration of your child's stay.
Do I need to send my child with snacks and/or tuck money?
Ryerson's Kitchen Staff prepare 3 nutritious meals each day plus a bed time snack. Camp staff also make sure that a camper who need food outside of meal time will get a healthy snack. As such, we discourage campers from bringing their own snacks. We are willing to make exceptions when needed. Ryerson does not permit campers to keep food in their cabins. Any food sent with campers will be stored in the kitchen and returned at pick-up.
Campers get tuck once during the week from the Normandale general store. To ensure equality among campers, tuck is included in the price of registration. You do NOT need to send your child with extra money.
What if my child gets homesick?
Our counsellors are trained to to help campers feel comfortable at camp when they are missing home. Calling home is not recommended but permitted if necessary. We have prepared some tips on homesickness which can be downloaded HERE
Can I send my child mail and/or email?
What if my child is coming with a sibling/friend, can he/she be in the same group and/or cabin?
Campers are able to make cabin mate requests directly on the registration form (link to form). We make every effort to place campers with their preferences however depending on the age and number of requests, placement together cannot always be guaranteed. The camp experience is about making new friends and learning how to work together with people of different backgrounds and interests. The whole camp comes together many times throughout the day, so even if your child is not in the same group/cabin as his/her friends, they will have an opportunity to be together at various times each day.
My child has special needs. Can he/she attend your camp?
Ryerson Camp welcomes and accommodates campers of all abilities. We are proud to partner with Reach for the Rainbow to provide a positive environment of inclusion and one-to-one support for children and youth with special needs and/ or disabilities. If your son/daughter has particular behavioural and/or emotional needs, please contact the camp prior to registering them so that we can work with you to ensure that we are able to provide a positive camp experience for your child.
What does it mean that Ryerson is a "Christian camp?"
Each of Ryerson's programs involve a variety of sports and other activities as well as daily sessions and discussion groups that communicate a message based on Christian values and beliefs. Although Ryerson camp is governed by the United Church of Canada, we are welcoming of campers from any cultural and/or religious background.
Can my child bring his/her cell phone, ipod, hairdryer, etc. to camp?
Campers are encouraged NOT to bring valuables and electronics to camp. Cabins are not equipped with outlets for camper use. As well, Ryerson Camp cannot guarantee that theft of losses will not occur and does not assume responsibility for lost or stolen articles.
